Mechanical Engineering Cover Letter

Mechanical Engineering Cover Letter - Sample

A Mechanical Engineering Cover Letter needs to tie in your business impact and macroeconomic relevance.

Your Cover Letter SHOULD NOT demonstrate why you want the job or mention soft skills.

We do not mention in cover letters soft skills such as:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Team Player
  • Takes Initiative

Instead, what we do is SHOW how you demonstrate those core competencies.

Our Cover Letter Format:

Introductory paragraph – describes yourself, your skillsets, and your contribution to the company’s mission

Second Paragraph – goes into detail about your projects and accomplishments

Third Paragraph – closing statements and re-iteration of your skills and alignment to the company’s mission and macroeconomic goals

How To Write A Mechanical Engineering Cover Letter

As we’ve stated above, you should write your cover letter in 3 paragraphs. The first being an introductory one, second being about your projects and accomplishments, and third to summarize everything.

The key here is that you need to demonstrate macroeconomic relevance, business impact, and your specific accomplishments and skillsets pertaining to the job description.

This is what will set you apart from other candidates.

Other candidates will be using basic means of writing a cover letter.

They will mention lines such as “I would like this position because xxxx or yyyyy”

Do not write your cover letter like that.

You do not say you’re a team player or able to work in a fast paced environment. You must SHOW this through your results.

First Paragraph

This is your introductory paragraph where you thank the employer for the opportunity to apply. You also state your alignment within the company’s macroeconomic mission.

Thank you for the opportunity to apply at XXX company. I firmly believe that my experience with XXX Company’s Product makes me a suitable candidate for this role. Ultimately, I wish to contribute to XXX Company’s efforts to be the industry leader in X product and serve in Y markets.

Second Paragraph

This is where you begin to brag about your accomplishments, in a humble manner of course.

Throughout my career, I’ve successfully led X products/projects and have overseen the production of $10M of equipment. My roles as both a team lead and an engineer has allowed me to cultivate my communication and leadership skills. Through the importance of collaboration, I have been able to deliver high quality work.

Third Paragraph

Make your closing statements in your third letter of your mechanical engineering cover letter.

I believe my background provides me the skillset and knowledge to successfully contribute to XXX Company’s efforts in X services or Y manufacturing. Through delivering quality work and excellent leadership skills, I would love to sustain XXX Company’s position as the industry leader in X product.

The Keypoints

We’re gonna say it again – you need to tie in your business and macroeconomic relevance in your cover letter. No matter what experience level you are at, you will be able to do this with your existing experience. This goes from entry level to senior level positions.

It is 100% possible to tie in your business acumen in your cover letters.

Mechanical Engineering Cover Letter FAQ

Why is our cover letter so short?

You don’t need an extremely dense cover letter. Think about it. From a recruiter’s standpoint, they want to quickly scan through these as they have HUNDREDS for each job opening. Having a cover letter that is clear and concise will make it easier to stand out.

Why is the template so simple?

We use a very simple cover letter template because it is much easier to read. Although you may think a fancy design will be appealing to the recruiter, it is not. Most of the time, recruiters will not take heavily designed cover letters seriously. Keep it simple.

Do we need a cover letter for mechanical engineering jobs?

Some mechanical engineering jobs will require cover letters. Most mechanical engineering jobs don’t require cover letters though. If you’re short on time, don’t bother applying to jobs that require a cover letter and just focus on getting your resume out there.

Should I tailor my cover letter to the job posting?

If you are going to write a cover letter for a job, you must tailor it to the job posting.
