Mechanical Engineering Mock Interview Service

Our Mechanical Engineering Mock Interview for companies are divided into two sections:

Behavioral and technical interview questions for engineering companies

See our comprehensive mechanical engineering interview question and answer list to prepare.

We prepare you to use the STAR framework to effectively answer those interview questions

Don’t get thrown off-guard in your interview

Use the STAR Framework

We highly recommend using the STAR framework in your mechanical engineering interviews. This goes for both behavioral and technical questions as they apply.

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result.

Answering your question in such a manner is an effective and easy to follow framework.

Instead of answering basic questions such as “What are your strengths” with a short answer, use the following:

I want to say that my greatest strength is X and I’d like to highlight the situation where I had to use X. I was responsible for doing X, and executed accordingly. As a result of execution, we met project on time deliverables 3 months ahead of schedule

You need to replace “X” as needed with your specific strength, situation, task, action, and result.

Mechanical Engineering Mock Interview Questions

Our Mechanical Engineering Mock Interview service consists of behavioral and technical questions.

You will find that our Mechanical Engineering mock interview questions are suited for companies such as:

Behavioral Questions

You must use the STAR method on behavioral questions.

The behavioral questions that we go over at a minimum are the following:

  1. Tell me about yourself.
  2. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  3. What are your greatest strengths?
  4. What are your greatest weaknesses?
  5. Tell me about a time you engaged in a conflict and what you did to resolve it.

Tell me about yourself

You will certainly get asked this question. Make sure you have a solid answer for this question because this sets the tone of your interview. You should also be ready to answer this question at any time as this is a defining question in who you are.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

This question will tell the recruiter or hiring manager if you’re in alignment with the position that they’re interviewing you for.

What are your greatest strengths?

This can be anything you’re strong in and ideally related to the position you’re interviewing for. Answer using the example that I have provided above and you’ll be solid.

What are your greatest weaknesses?

This question is similar to strengths – ideally you’ll pick something not too relevant to the job and you’re going to highlight how you’re working on fixing that weakness.

Tell me about a time you engaged in a conflict – what did you do to resolve it

You will definitely be asked a behavioral question such as this one.

Be ready to use the STAR framework to answer this question.

Technical Questions

In engineering school, you’re required to take courses such as statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, fluids, vibrations, and etc.

In the industry?

You barely use what you learned in school. You don’t need to know how to do lengthy calculations such as those you did in school. Instead, what you need to understand are the basic concepts of engineering in those courses are and apply that to engineering applications.

Depending on which specific job you’re applying for, we will cover specific mechanical engineering technical questions.

The questions we ask will apply basic fundamentals of engineering such as:

  1. Explain to me what the Carnot power cycle is
  2. Tell me about GD&T and how it is applied to mechanical systems
  3. Evaluate the piping system shown and tell me where pressure is higher
  4. Draw a free body diagram of this mechanical system
  5. Evaluate the manufacturing process of this component and tell me how you would improve it

We ask questions that use the basics of engineering such as these because they will be what you encounter in the industry.

Carnot Power Cycle

The Carnot Power Cycle is a very fundamental engineering process that you should know as an engineer.

GD&T

Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing makes modern day manufacturing possible. Understand that GD&T sets standards in place so that mechanical components are able to fit.

Piping System

You should understand the basics such as flow, pressure, and hydraulics.

Free Body Diagrams

You should be able to look at a simple mechanical system and draw a free body diagram. Even if you don’t need to do so in your interview, being able to do so will increase competence in engineering.

Manufacturing Processes

Understand the basics of machining and manufacturing of your products. Don’t know how something gets made? Google is your friend here.

If you’re interviewing for a Mechanical Engineering role and any of these don’t ring a bell?

You’re not going to get the job.

FAQ

What do I do if I’m nervous for my mechanical engineering interview questions?

Although much easier said than done, you need to calm down. Practice interview questions over and over until you’re confident in each of your answers. Practice in front of a mirror, record yourself, dedicate your free time to acing your interview.

What are the most commonly asked mechanical engineering interview questions?

Mechanical engineering interviews will go over the basics of foundations such as thermodynamics and strength of materials. Understand basic terminology such as yield strength and tensile strength. Know your engineering power cycles. (These are all things you should generally know as a mechanical engineer)

I don’t know the answer to a specific engineering interview question, what do I do?

If you don’t know how to answer a question during a job interview, just pause for a few seconds.

Do the following:

Ask clarifying questions
Verbalize your thought process
Tell the interviewer – “I don’t know the answer to the problem, but here’s how I will go about it”

Many times, during an interview, they will not expect you to know the answer. Instead, what they want to see is your thought process and how you think. If you can demonstrate that you can perform problem solving on the spot in high pressure situations, they will see that you’re competent.

Should I reschedule my interview if I am not ready?

If you’re really unprepared and could use a few days, reschedule your interview. These few days where you prepare can literally make or break you. There is a thing such as over preparing for an interview, so beware of that.

How long does it take to hear back from an engineering interview?

You should hear back within a week. Some engineering companies can be really slow with the hiring process so expect to hear back within 1-2 weeks. If you haven’t heard back from your employer, then assume you didn’t get the job and move on. Keep applying to other jobs as it is a numbers game.
