Sample Senior Mechanical Engineer Resume

My Sample Senior Mechanical Engineer Resume displays what all resumes need:

  • Be clear and concise
  • Display quantitative results and achievements
  • Use key words from the job description

If you’ve been reading ultmeche for awhile, then you’ll find that I always mention those key three things. Drill those into your head and make it so that you can’t write a resume without doing those three.

At this level in your career, you have dealt with many projects and probably have a hard time making it clear and concise. Trust me – I’ve reviewed a ton of senior mechanical engineering resumes and they all have the same issue – they get way too in-depth.

I’ve cut down resumes that were four pages long down to one page.

Why did they have so many pages? Engineers, from my experience, generally have a hard time explaining things in a clear and concise manner. They get very into detail and make the biggest issues out of something so small.

In your current senior mechanical engineer resume, you probably aren’t displaying quantitative results and accomplishments effectively. You’ve designed a ton of parts in your life time? Add a bullet point in there that details how much revenue the parts you’re designing bring in.

Being Clear and Concise

It is a must for an engineering resume to be clear and concise. Although job applications will initially get scanned through the ATS (Application Tracking System) for key words, it will eventually get to a human. The said human (recruiter or hiring manager) will need to be able to read through the resume.

Displaying Quantitative Results and Achievements

Quantitative results and achievements on your resume will provide employers an actual feel for what you’ve done. Do you actually provide value and generate revenue for the company? Or are you just a line item expense? If you’re ultimately not doing any activity that is generating revenue for the company, then why would you be there? Quantitative results and achievements are what tell your employer the value that you provide.

Key Words

Going back to the fact that jobs are submitted through an application tracking system software, it is a must for your resume to have key words. Key words include snippets from the job description you’re applying for and also hard skill sets such as CAD software or programming.

The Sections You Need To Break You Senior Mechanical Engineering Resume

Experience

You will notice that I kept the experience section very short and sweet for each position. The above resume has 4 positions, with 2-3 bullets for each. It’s important that these bullets display high level, quantitative results and accomplishments + key words + be clear and concise.

Education

Self explanatory to put education – where you went to college + the degree that you have. If you have any significant contributions or awards, it is also good to highlight them as bullets underneath.

Additional

Use the additional section in your resume to break up the following:

  • Technical Skills – CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, NX) or FEA (ANSYS)
  • Awards – Dean’s List, Scholarships, etc.
  • Certifications – Professional Engineering License, etc.
  • Programming Languages – MATLAB, Python, CSS, HTML, etc.

That’s it, those are all what you need. Everything else in a resume would just be additional fluff. This goes back to being clear and concise with your resume.

FAQ

Why are your resumes so simple?

Think about the view from a recruiter’s standpoint. Would they rather read something that is simple and easy to understand or a bunch of technical jargon? I’ll let you decide on which one they would rather pick.

What if I can’t think of any quantitative results or accomplishments?

If you can’t think of any quantitative accomplishments as a senior mechanical engineer, then you’re not thinking hard enough. I guarantee there are results that you have that you can quantify, I will help you on this.

How many pages should a senior mechanical engineering resume have?

A senior mechanical engineering resume should still be only one page. The experience for each section should be clear and concise. I see many senior engineers struggle with displaying their experience as they get too in detail. Senior mechanical engineers need to learn how to be more clear and concise. Basically, each section of employment should be short, but high level.

High level accomplishments that are quantifiable include:

  • Production volume of products
  • Improvement of process efficiency
  • Generating revenue through the sale of designed products
