The short answer to “Should I pay someone to write my resume is”…..YES.
Only if you don’t know how to write a resume. Resume writing is not a skill that is taught in college courses. It’s hard to know how to write a resume unless one of your colleagues or a a business mentor teaches you.
There will come a point in your career when you need to write one to apply for a job.
I remember I got a template from a friend (that didn’t know how to write a resume) and was using that for hundreds of internship applications. This was during my sophomore and junior year. My resume did not get me any interviews.
The sad thing? I didn’t know that my resume was at fault, I thought it was a good resume at the time (2015).

February 29, 2024My resume (2015)
I cringe whenever I look at my 2015 resume. (Information updated for privacy, but the content stays the same)
This out-dated resume contains none of what I have been preaching.
My old resume:
- Uses space ineffectively
- Has an objective section
- Does not display quantitative results and accomplishments
- Barely uses any keywords
I can’t believe I sent the above resume out for hundreds of jobs. It’s no wonder that I never heard back from employers.
If I were to pay someone to write my resume, I would have had better luck applying for jobs. I would have gotten more interviews, call backs, and job offers had I had a better resume. That resume may even have gotten me an internship freshman or sophomore year, meaning I could’ve gotten paid during that time period.
I really wish I knew how to write a resume for engineering internships.
My resume (2022)
My current resume:
- Utilizes space efficiently
- Only includes relevant information – experience, education, skills and certifications
- Displays quantitative results and accomplishments (dollar values, line items, efficiency improvements..)
- Includes keywords
No one looking over your shoulder as you write resumes. As a result, you are free to do what you want with your resumes. This is both good and bad.
Although there is no “industry standard” way to write a resume, there are certain guidelines to follow.
If you don’t know how to
- Write a resume
- Format a resume
- Display your quantitative results and achievements
- Include Keywords
- Determine what to keep and include on your resume
You will struggle when looking for a job. I had no idea what I was doing when writing a resume. I thought my friend did, but when I look back, she didn’t have a job at a prestigious employer.
Prestigious employers all look for the above items in your resume.
Reflection of Resume
When I look back, I’d have wished I didn’t cheap out by not hiring someone to write my resume. I probably missed out on a few $1000s or $10000s by not having an engineering internship my freshman or sophomore year. Just because I wouldn’t pay someone a few hundred bucks to write a resume.
Instead, I did it myself, which only hurt myself in the job process.
If you don’t know how to write a resume or you’re not getting interviews after 1-2 weeks of applying, hire someone.

Paying Someone To Write Resume FAQ (Short Answers)
Should I pay someone to write my resume?
Yes – it will save you money long term by getting your foot in the door faster. The more time you spend job hunting, the less time you will be making money.
How did you learn how to write a resume?
Through seven years of trial and error. I would constantly make tweaks here and there on my resume throughout the years and took note of what worked and didn’t.
What if my resume gets interviews but doesn’t look like yours?
That’s totally fine. As long as you’re getting interviews and calls from recruiters, you’re doing something right.
What if I have no quantitative results or accomplishments?
Get together with me and we’ll figure it out. I thought I had no “quantitative” results or accomplishments to put on my 2015, but as I look back, I can see many opportunities where I could have.
Should I tailor my resume to each job application?
If you have the time to do so, yes. Otherwise, make yourself a generic template in which you will use to spam apply to hundreds of job applications. It’s the name of the game.
