The problem with most resume writers
What is the problem with most resume writers?
Most resume writers come from an HR or recruiting background.
As a result, they don’t really understand the value and business impact of engineering work.
Instead they look at it from a core competencies approach.
Core competencies meaning something such as soft skills.
We disagree with the soft skills approach on resumes.
Saying things such as “ability to work in a fast paced environment, ability to multitask, ability to problem solve, etc.” is absolutely useless in our engineering resume writing opinion.
What is more useful in your resume is the dollar value impact of your work for the company.

We use a very simple resume format – you may even be familiar with the Harvard resume format.

A resume that is simple, clear and concise, and contains keywords, quantitative results and accomplishments it the best way to write your engineering resume.
Forget about creative resume formats – the ones with a bunch of color, the ones you get from Canva, and the ones with fancy graphs and charts. These resume will be tossed in the trash and won’t be taken seriously – especially at these high paying engineering companies.
Disregard all of the advice you see on your resume about this – I have many examples of my simple resume working.
Do not, under any circumstances, use a colorful creative type of resume format.
Why?
Because high paying engineering companies will implement tools such as an ATS scanner to filter out candidates they don’t like. They integrate software such as this to streamline the hiring process. They want to eliminate non-qualified candidates as quickly as possible.
The next step after the ATS scanner is the human part of the job scanning, where the recruiter will scan through resumes for keywords pertaining to the job. Additionally with these keywords, recruiters will be looking for dollar value impact on these resumes.
Simple is best
We’d like to end on the note that simple is best.
The resume writing frameworks we use are simple.
The interviewing frameworks we use are also simple.
As this should go without saying, you should keep everything that you do simple.
We find that simple frameworks are the best.
When people overcomplicate things is when they get overwhelmed and inevitably fail.
When people use simple frameworks, it’s easy to get tried and tested feedback and data. Once you get realtime feedback and data, because you’ve used something so simple, it’s easy to review the data and make simple tweaks.
